The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
