Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
