Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
